Mastering Organic Chemistry for NEET

Organic Chemistry intimidates many NEET aspirants, but with the right approach it becomes one of the most scoring sections of the paper.

Build Your Foundation with GOC

General Organic Chemistry (GOC) is the foundation for everything else in organic. Understanding inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation, and electromeric effect will help you predict the outcome of reactions rather than memorising each one individually. Invest time in GOC early โ€” every topic in organic chemistry builds on it.

Learn Reaction Mechanisms, Not Just Products

NEET asks about the mechanism, intermediate, and conditions of reactions โ€” not just the final product. For substitution reactions (SN1, SN2), addition reactions, and elimination reactions, understand why a reaction proceeds the way it does. This understanding allows you to answer unseen questions that are variations of familiar reactions.

Master Named Reactions

Aldol condensation, Cannizzaro reaction, Clemmensen reduction, Wolff-Kishner reduction, Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation, Reimer-Tiemann reaction, and Kolbe's reaction appear regularly. Know the reactants, conditions, products, and mechanism for each. Flashcards are ideal for drilling named reactions.

Biomolecules and Polymers

Carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins, hormones, and polymers account for 3โ€“5 questions per year. These are fact-heavy topics that reward careful NCERT reading. The structures of glucose, amino acids, and nucleotides; the classification of carbohydrates; and the types of polymers are all commonly tested.

Practice with Previous Year Questions

Organic Chemistry PYQs reveal which reactions and compounds appear most frequently. You will find that certain reactions โ€” like the preparation of ethanol, benzene reactions, and aldehyde chemistry โ€” recur across years. Prioritise these high-frequency topics in your preparation.
